The film is loosely based on the real-life story of the dreaded don, Haji Mastan, who was a notorious smuggler and gangster in 1960s and 1970s Mumbai. The story revolves around Raees Ali (played by Shāh Rukh Khan), a bootlegger and smuggler who rises to power in the underworld of 1980s Ahmedabad. Raees starts his business with a small loan from a local moneylender and eventually becomes one of the most feared and respected figures in the city.
