The film takes place after Ethan Hunt has retired from active duty and is now living a quiet life with his girlfriend, Julia (Michelle Monaghan). However, his peaceful existence is short-lived, as his former protégée, Lindsey Farris (Keri Russell), is kidnapped by the notorious arms dealer, Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Ethan is forced back into action to rescue Lindsey and prevent Davian from selling a deadly virus.
