The movie takes place in a world where monsters live in their own society, and the main source of energy is children's screams. The story follows Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman), two monsters who meet at Monsters University. Mike is a small, one-eyed green monster, while Sulley is a large, furry monster. They become roommates and start attending the university, where they try to become Scarers. However, they soon discover that they have different personalities and struggle to work together. Along the way, they befriend a group of misfit monsters and learn the value of friendship and teamwork.
